After bringing the beloved character to life in live-action with 2002’s Scooby-Doo and its 2004 sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, actor Matthew Lillard has went on to firmly establish himself as the voice of Norville ‘Shaggy’ Rogers in the various Scooby-Doo animated outings since 2010.
However, despite making the role his own this past decade, Warner Bros. made the decision to recast Shaggy for the new CG-animated movie Scoob! movie, with Lillard only learning about Will Forte’s casting when the news broke in the press. Now, following the film’s VOD release in the States, the actor has told Entertainment Tonight that it was “a drag” and “a bummer” to miss out.
“About Scoob, I don’t have a lot of good things to say,” he said. “I wish them all well, I hope the movie does really well. I mean, it was a drag [to miss out]. And I was surprised that happened. And I think Hollywood’s a very interesting place and I’ve been around for a long time. Some of them are easier to accept than others when you don’t get a job, but that one was a bummer. I like playing the part. I like sort of having a legacy and a career that I’ve spent 30 years doing. So I like the fact that I was that part, and it was a bummer that it went a different way.”
