Matthew Vaughn suggests Guardians of the Galaxy deserves award recognition, clarifies recent Dark Knight Trilogy comments

January 22, 2015 by Alfie Nobes

In a recent interview for HeyUGuys Matthew Vaughn put forward the argument that superhero films are largely underappreciated in the world of cinematic award ceremonies, in particular Guardians of the Galaxy.

He suggests that the Marvel Studios film was a bigger challenge to create than a number of other films “where you just plonk a camera here and there and have a good actor”.

Vaughn also went on to comment on remarks he made about Christopher Nolan’s dark style of superhero film, which he says were taken out of context by the internet.

“What I said is Nolan is very good at doing what he did with Batman, and the subject matter of Batman deserved to be dark, but there are other superheroes, like I don’t think Superman should be dark. The clue’s in the costume, what it should be like…You have to always respect source material, and if you’re going to reinvent it, reinvent it in a way that’s done in respect, not just for the sake of doing it.”

You can also check out our own interview with Vaughn below where he discusses the comparisons between Kingsman: The Secret Service and Guardians of the Galaxy:

Matthew Vaughn’s latest offering, Kingsman: The Secret Service is set for release on January 29th in the UK and February 13th in the US.

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Featuring in the cast of Kingsman: The Secret Service are Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Taron Egerton (The Smoke), Samuel L. Jackson (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Michael Caine (The Dark Knight Rises), Mark Strong (Kick-Ass), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean), Sofia Boutella (StreetDance 2) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
