McG in talks to direct Masters of the Universe

January 22, 2016 by Luke Owen

The long-gestating Masters of the Universe reboot has gone through several writers and directors over the last few years, and it now looks like they’ve found their latest helmer.

Deadline are reporting that Sony are looking to target McG (Charlie’s Angels, Terminator Salvation) to take on the project. If McG joins, he will re-write the latest version of the script written by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch (Predators, Hitman: Agent 47).

Masters of the Universe was original set to be directed by Jon M Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jem and the Holograms) who exited the project in 2014. Previous writers have included Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass), Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok).

Set on the mystical planet of Eternia, the story follows Prince Adam, a warrior who is given the power to transform into hero He-Man, who must do battle against arch-nemesis Skeletor, a villain who wants control of the universe and the magical Castle Grayskull. The toyline was made into the hit cartoon series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which ran between 1983-1985. Its popularity led to a live action adaptation Masters of the Universe in 1987, produced by The Cannon Group starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella.
