Meg 2: The Trench sets August 2023 release date

April 27, 2022 by Liam Waddington

During a panel at CinemaCon, Warner Bros. announced that the upcoming Ben Wheatley-directed sequel to the 2018 sharksploitation blockbuster The Meg will be released theatrically on August 4th, 2023.

Meg 2: The Trench, which is based on the 1999 book The Trench by author Steve Alten, will see Jason Statham returning to his role as Jonas Taylor alongside Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai and Page Kennedy who are also reprising their roles from the first film.

New additions to the cast include Sienna Guillory (Resident Evil) as the head of an applied sciences division, Skyler Samuels (The Gifted) as an adventure-loving member of Statham’s submarine crew, Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Snowfall) as a hard-edged mercenary, and Wu Jing (Tai Chi Boxer) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.

Ben Wheatley, who is best known for Free Fire and High-Rise, is helming the sequel from a script by the screenwriters of the first film – Dean Georgaris, Ric Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber. The film will be produced by Gravity Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures.
