Melissa Rosenberg and Krysten Ritter discuss the ramifications of Jessica Jones season one finale going forward

May 22, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Warning: Spoilers for the season one finale of Jessica Jones follow…

Back in January, it was announced that Netflix has renewed Marvel’s Jessica Jones for a second season, which will shoot back-to-back with the big superhero team-up miniseries The Defenders.

During a Q&A at the Vulture Festival in New York (via EW), showrunner Melissa Rosenberg and star Krysten Ritter have been discussing the events of the season one finale – where Jessica is forced to kill David Tennant’s villain Kilgrave – and how this will impact the character going forward.

“The greatest rape of Jessica Jones was being forced to become a murderer,” said Rosenberg. “She took a life, and that’s so counter to who she is. The reason she doesn’t just walk up and kill him is she doesn’t let him define her in that way. She walks away with some really complicated stuff going on, which we’ll be able to explore next season.”

“[Kilgrave] was her reason for getting up at 3 o’clock in the afternoon,” Ritter added . “She spends most of the show trying to get him into prison. She doesn’t want to kill him, but that becomes her only choice. I don’t think all that trauma and PTSD goes away now that she kills him.”
