Minecraft movie loses its director but gains new screenwriters

August 4, 2018 by Gary Collinson

It looks like Warner Bros.’s Minecraft has hit a major stumbling block, with The Wrap reporting that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney has dropped out of the project, having been announced as director and co-writer back in 2015.

According to the site, the studio has now tapped Aaron and Adam Nee (Band of Robbers) to pen a new script for the planned video game adaptation, and the original May 24th 2019 release date is no longer considered realistic.

It marks the second high profile gig for Aaron and Adam Nee, who signed on as a replacement for David S. Goyer in the director’s chair of Sony’s Masters of the Universe earlier this year.

Minecraft has become a global phenomenon since its release in 2011, shifting over 140 million copies across all platforms to make it the second best-selling video game of all time after Tetris.
