Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One opens to $235 million worldwide

July 17, 2023 by Amie Cranswick

Hollywood’s had a bit of a tough time at the box office recently with its big budget tentpoles with the likes of The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bombing hard and ramping up the pressure on the struggling theatrical industry.

However, in a repeat of last year with Top Gun: Maverick, step forward Mr. Tom Cruise, whose latest stunt-filled action extravaganza Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has just kicked some life into the summer box office with a global opening weekend of $235 million this past weekend.

Debuting in 71 markets, the seventh instalment in the spy series grossed $80 million domestically to top the North American box office, with a further $155 million from international territories. That sets a new franchise record for both domestic and global openings, with 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout opening to $153.5 million worldwide on its way to a series high total gross of $791.7 million.

Will Dead Reckoning – Part One have the legs to challenge Fallout for M:I box office supremacy? Time will tell, but with both Barbie and Oppenheimer incoming on Friday, it will certainly face some stiff competition over the coming weeks.

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One sees Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt, alongside Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Cary Elwes, Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma, and Rob Delaney.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is in cinemas now.
