MTV is rebooting Clone High with original creative team

July 4, 2020 by Gary Collinson

MTV Studios has announced that it is set to reboot the cult animated series Clone High, reuniting with creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) to reimagine the satirical adult animation.

“We thrilled to reunite with Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence to re-imagine this cult classic as we rapidly grow our portfolio of beloved and iconic adult animation series,” said Chris McCarthy, President, ViacomCBS Entertainment and Youth Group.

Clone High originally premiered in 2002, and explored high school and coming of age tension through the eyes of cloned historical figures and U.S. presidents. The new series will follow a number of prominent historical figures, including Abraham Lincoln, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc and John F. Kennedy, as they face the trials and tribulations of normal teenage life.

The official press release makes no mention of Mahatma Gandhi, whose depiction in the original show sparked outage in India. MTV apologised for the controversy, but cancelled the series shortly afterwards.

Erica Rivinoja, a writer on the original run, is set to serve as showrunner on the new iteration of Clone High, as well as co-writing the pilot with Lord and Miller.
