Naomie Harris says Barry Jenkins pitched a Miss Moneypenny spinoff to Bond producers

October 27, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Naomie Harris is set to return to the Bond franchise next year as she reprises the role of Miss Moneypenny alongside Daniel Craig in No Time To Die, and during an interview with Good Morning America to promote her new film Black and Blue, the British actress has revealed that her Moonlight director Barry Jenkins actually pitched Eon a Moneypenny spinoff film, but franchise producer Barbara Broccoli “wasn’t so down” for the idea.

“[Jenkins] has wanted to do a bad ass, kick ass action thing with Moneypenny which I’m all for actually, and I got him together with Barbara Broccoli, our producer, and I was like ‘let’s make this happen’, but she wasn’t so down for it. But maybe one day, who knows. The conversation has started at least, and we’re continuing it here…”

There have of course been calls for a female Bond, which is something that Barbara Broccoli has previously ruled out, so perhaps a Moneypenny movie could fill that void? Or maybe a female-led team-up with No Time To Die’s Lashana Lynch, whose character has reportedly taken on the 007 designation in the new movie?

Let us know in the comments below if you’d have any interest in seeing Barry Jenkins directing Naomie Harris in a Miss Moneypenny spinoff…

Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

No Time To Die is set for release in the UK on April 2nd 2020 and in the U.S. on April 8th 2020 and stars Daniel Craig (James Bond), Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Moneypenny), Rory Kinnear (Tanner), Léa Seydoux (Madeleine Swann), Ben Whishaw (Q), Jeffrey Wright (Felix Leiter) and Christoph Waltz (Blofeld), while new additions include Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049), Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel), Billy Magnussen (Velvet Buzzsaw), Dali Benssalah (A Faithful Man) and David Dencik (Top of the Lake).
