NBCUniversal’s Peacock plans The Little Mermaid sequel series Washed Up

May 22, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Peacock, NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service, is said to be developing a TV series that serves as a sequel to the iconic The Little Mermaid tale. The show is reportedly titled Washed Up and will see writer-producer Gracie Glassmeyer and Jennie Synder Urman spearheading the project.

Reports say the show will stay true to author Hans Christian Andersen’s original tragic fairy tale, as opposed Disney’s 1989 animated film. Expect the series to have a more mature tone as the original fairy tale isn’t as happy as the animated musical.

Washed Up is set fifteen years later after our titular mermaid gave up her tail to marry a prince. Now she’s in her early 30s and is miserable, unmotivated, and in a loveless marriage. When her father mysteriously passes away, the mermaid suspects foul play and embarks on an epic adventure to save not only her once underwater kingdom but humankind as well.

Glassmeyer will serve as the series’ executive producer, and will also join Urman in crafting Here She Lies, a dark comedy series starring Yael Grobglasalong for HBO Max. As yet, there’s no casting news for Washed up.
