Netflix acquires legal drama Monsanto starring Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Laura Dern

May 24, 2024 by Ricky Church

News has come from the Cannes Film Festival that Netflix has bought Monsanto, a legal drama based on a true story that stars Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World) and Laura Dern (Big Little Lies).

Monsanto is directed by John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks), who also co-wrote the script with Michael Wisnet and Alexandra Duparc. The film “tells the true story of young upstart lawyer Brent Wisner (Powell), who took on the court case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie). Johnson used the company’s product Roundup, a top-selling weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. During the trial, Monsanto Company’s chief toxicologist Dr. Melinda Rogers (Dern), testifies that Roundup is safe.”

Producing the film is Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff, Jon Levin, Philip Schulz-Deyle, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

Powell’s star has been on the rise since his role in the billion dollar hit Top Gun: Maverick. He recently starred in the romcom Anyone But You opposite Sydney Sweeney and was just cast in a remake of Heaven Can Wait.

Mackie is most known for playing the superhero Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role that has been upgraded as Falcon has become the new Captain America following the events of Avengers: Endgame and Falcon & The Winter Soldier. He’ll be seen in next summer’s Marvel outing Captain America: Brave New World.

Dern, meanwhile, is most known for her role as Dr. Ellie Satler in the Jurassic Park franchise as well Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the TV series Big Little Lies and Palm Royale.

There is no word yet on when Monsanto will premiere on Netflix. Check back with us when we have more information on the streamer’s latest legal drama.
