Netflix cancels Archive 81 after one season

March 25, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Anyone hoping to unravel the mysteries locked within the videotapes of Netflix’s Archive 81 should brace themselves for disappointment, because one of their top ranking shows of 2022 has gone the way of The Dark Crystal and I Am Not Okay With This by being cancelled by the streaming service after a single season.

Deadline reports that Archive 81, a supernatural thriller which was loosely inspired by the popular podcast of the same name, and shot to No. 1 in the Netflix rankings, will not be getting a second season.

The news is quite surprising considering the 86% rating on RottenTomatoes, and the fact it was only released on January 14th, but Deadline speculate that Netflix are making their renewal decisions based solely on viewership versus cost, and as a result the spooky eight-part show will remain in their own archive as a single season.

Archive 81 follows archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), who takes a job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994. Reconstructing the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), he is drawn into her investigation of a dangerous cult at the Visser apartment building. As the season unfolds across these two timelines, Dan slowly finds himself obsessed with uncovering what happened to Melody. When the two characters form a mysterious connection, Dan becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.

Archive 81 is currently streaming on Netflix.
