Netflix cancels Cowboy Bebop after single season

December 10, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Just three weeks on from its premiere, Netflix has decided to cancel its live-action Cowboy Bebop series and will not be moving forward with a second season of the anime adaptation.

There had been plenty of excitement for the John Cho-led series based on marketing material, but the final product failed to hit with the majority of fans and critics. The show also made little impact with regards to Netflix’s Top 10 rankings, so much so that the streamer hasn’t even waited for the usual 28-day audience data before making a decision on its future.

Both Cho and executive producer  Javier Grillo-Marxuach took to Twitter to react to the cancellation with the following posts:

While Cowboy Bebop won’t be moving forward with a second season, production company Tomorrow Studios does have another anime adaptation heading to the streamer in the future with a live-action take on the beloved One Piece. Hopefully that will be better received than this first effort…

COWBOY BEBOP is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka “cowboys,” all trying to outrun the past. As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them.

Cowboy Bebop features a cast that includes John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, Alex Hassell, Elena Satine, Geoff Stults, Tamara Tunie, Mason Alexander Park, Rachel House and Ann Truong.

Cowboy Bebop is available to stream now on Netflix.
