Netflix CEO wants to “take more risks” with Original Series

June 1, 2017 by Jordan Jones

It looks like Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is not merely content with having a high number of successful original series on the streaming platform. Talking to CNBC, Hastings made it clear that he has no desire to play things safe with any Netflix Original Series moving forward:

“Our hit ratio is way too high right now. So, we’ve canceled very few shows … I’m always pushing the content team: We have to take more risk; you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall. [By taking risks] you get some winners that are just unbelievable winners, like 13 Reasons Why. It surprised us. It’s a great show, but we didn’t realize just how it would catch on.”

While most people would call very few cancellations a tremendous success, Mr. Hastings does have a point. If Netflix truly is proving to be the platform where experimental television can take place, shouldn’t that be taken advantage of? In a world of remakes, reboots, connected universes, and sequels, Netflix can be the place for the niche ideas. The place where lesser known directors can have exposure. His statement is refreshing, if a bit unconventional.
