Neva Howell joins Superman as Martha Kent

April 17, 2024 by Ricky Church

Not long after it was revealed character actor Pruitt Taylor Vince has joined James Gunn’s Superman as the Man of Steel’s adoptive father Jonathan Kent, The Wrap has now announced that Neva Howell (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul) will play Martha Kent, Superman’s mother.

Martha Kent played a major role in Clark Kent’s journey to become Superman as she and Jonathan instilled in him the values and ideals he upholds as the world’s greatest superhero. Together with Jonathan, they discovered Kal-El as a baby after his ship crash landed on their farm and they took him in as their own. In the Superman comics and other media, she lives to see Clark become Superman, often designing his first suit using the blanket he was wrapped in as his cape, and continues to offer him advice on protecting the world and doing what is right.

As a significant and fan-favourite character in Superman’s life, Martha has appeared in nearly all live-action appearances Superman has made. She’s been played by Phyllis Thaxter in the Christopher Reeve Superman series, Eva Marie Saint in Superman Returns and Diane Lane in Man of Steel and the DCEU films while the television side has seen her played by Katherine Callan in Lois & Clark, Annette O’Toole in Smallville and Michele Scarabelli in Superman & Lois.

Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, Wendell Pierce as Perry White and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent.

Superman will be released on July 25, 2025.
