The New Mutants, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Gambit set for IMAX releases

December 10, 2017 by Gary Collinson

2018 is going to be a big year for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, with the studio set to release the spinoffs The New Mutants and Deadpool 2, along with the latest chapter in the main series, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, as well as finally kicking off production on the long-gestating Gambit solo movie.

Fox and IMAX have now announced that three of those – The New Mutants, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Gambit – are to be digitally remastered into the IMAX format and released in IMAX theaters. Dark Phoenix will mark the first time that a movie in the main X-Men series will receive an IMAX release.

Fox and IMAX have previously announced IMAX releases for the upcoming films Maze Runner: The Death Cure, The Predator and Alita: Battle Angel., while the upcoming sci-fi The Darkest Minds will also be remastered for the format.

“Building on the success of standout films from Avatar, which remains the highest-grossing IMAX release ever, to more recently Deadpool, Logan, and War for the Planet of the Apes, we’re delighted to extend our partnership with our friends at Twentieth Century Fox Film by including this stellar lineup of exciting blockbusters on our slate,” said IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster.

“As we continue to create films with larger-than-life stories, we are thrilled to extend and strengthen our partnership with our colleagues at Imax and look forward to sharing our slate via the Imax immersive format with audiences around the world,” added Chris Aronson, Fox Film president of domestic theatrical distribution, and Andrew Cripps, president of international theatrical distribution.

The New Mutants is set for release on April 13th 2018, followed by X-Men: Dark Phoenix on November 2nd 2018 and Gambit on February 14th 2019.
