Nintendo officially announces Super Mario Bros. animated movie from Illumination Entertainment

February 3, 2018 by Gary Collinson

If you cast your mind back to November, you may recall a report which suggested that Nintendo was looking to bring its iconic Super Mario Bros. property back to the big screen by teaming up with Illumination Entertainment for an animated feature, and now the video game giant has made it official:

This will of course be the second time that Nintendo’s mascot has graced the big screen, with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo taking on the roles of Mario and Luigi for the disastrous 1993 live-action adaptation – a movie which was hammered by fans and critics alike, and led to Nintendo’s extreme reluctance to allow adaptations of any of their IPs over the past 25 years.

Illumination Entertainment has of course developed quite the reputation these past few years through the likes of Despicable Me, Minions and The Secret Life of Pets, so it would seem that Nintendo is feeling pretty confident that its company mascot will be in safe hands with the animation studio.
