Kickstarter has become a haven for independent film projects. Whether it is Zach Braff, Spike Lee or Hal Hartley all searching for funding, or passionate filmmakers who simply want to raise an issue through an informative documentary, it seems Kickstarter is the place to be. Considering it is a new year and new year’s often instil a sense of community and support for others dreams, here at Flickering Myth we thought this could be an easy way to access up and coming films that you can personally be a part of. One of the binds behind Kickstarter is that you are only online for a limited period (normally a month) to hold out your hand, so now is the time to shine a light and donate money. As I write this opening paragraph, I can confirm that I have no connection to the filmmakers and this is merely a product of searching and sharing ideas and, ultimately, finding projects that I’d love to see being made. So, without further ado, here are three that look particularly interesting …
NINTENDO QUEST – An Unofficial Nintendo and NES Documentary! (21 days to go…)
Remember blowing in that grey, block cartridge? Remember Mega Man 2? Oh, I do. Such happy days. Akin to Kickstarter-funded Video Games: The Movie, this is a film part-Super Size Me (He has 30 days to hunt down every NES game that has existed) and part-Fanboys (These are Nintendo-fanatics!) with the added value of 8-bit gaming and a cyber-soundtrack. Again, this is all about distribution and the hope that these fellas can bring this to your home, wherever you are! (This is also a great example of a Kickstarter that has already achieved 933% of its goal! So, it’s all about you getting a copy!). The video is a lot of fun and, if it’s anything to go by, serves as evidence as to how fun the film could be.
“We’re only asking for $1000 because it will ease some of our legal and insurance costs but it won’t derail the film if we’re unsuccessful. This is for the fans that recently discovered our community as there is no guarantee that we’ll sell discs in the future due to overhead costs.”

The Great American Candy Movie (14 days to get $50,000…)
I’m not a huge fan of the term ‘Candy’. Ridiculously, my heritage only appreciates the term ‘sweets’. But I do love some sweets. And I’m not alone. The Beals Brothers are near-on obsessed with sweets. Titled The Hard Candy Kid, the team have only completed a small part of production and they need your help to ensure that the rest is covered. Their endeavour has attracted some high-profile attention including Yahoo Movies, Indiewire and Film Pulse – but they are still a long way off. The story involves a fictional park, Mallowland, and one man’s quest to save it. The Beals intend to jump between archive footage and their own story to tell the tale. It’s brave and innovative, with enough sugar to blow our minds. Whether the film fizzes and pops or, like a gobstopper, merely floats around for too long, I don’t know. But, if I were you, I’d take the wrapper off and give it a taste…
“We threw all that remained of our resources into shooting the preliminary sequence featured in our video to show how amazing the film will be. Now we need help to make the push to shoot it all. Your support will go toward renting equipment and building the magical sets we need to shoot a candy wonderland. Hits – A Film by David Cross (19 days to get $100,000…)
Like me, I’m sure many of you know David Cross. Tobias in Arrested Development. The funniest thing about Scary Movie 2 (“I can do it myself”). A stand-up comedian who reduces you to a bumbling, tear-sodden mess if you happen to catch him live. This brilliant man has now broken into filmmaking and Hits is his directorial debut. Crucially, he intends to release the film in the same manner as Radiohead when they released In Rainbows, whereby you pay what you want for the film. If you like it, you can empty your savings into his account. If you don’t, you can pay twenty pence. Or not. I assume you can choose not to pay a penny. In any case, his Kickstarter is all about publicity and distribution whereby it will fund a tour across America and ensure the film can be released in this experimental manner.
“We are distributing ourselves and there are costs associated with making all of this happen. In addition to theater rental fees, we need to cover our marketing and publicity efforts. We ideally want to be in 50 markets, but the more money we raise the more theaters we can be in”
