Olivia Cooke details her first days on House of Dragon as Alicent: “It was amazing and I was very hungover”

September 21, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Olivia Cooke will play Alicent going forward on the Game of Thrones prequel titled House of Dragon.

The show is a smash hit for HBO, and Cooke will soon enter the series with some significant momentum. But this upcoming debut also brought up not-so-great memories about her first day of shooting. As she prepares to set into the role as an older Alicent, Cooke opened up about her first day on set during a new interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“It was amazing, and I was very hungover. Really bad, actually. Really bad. And I never do that, but there’s this comedian in England who I love, Alan Carr, and he’s got a podcast. He invited me to be on the podcast, and I was very excited. And my call time the next day wasn’t until 11, so I brought a bottle of wine just as a gesture and the podcast finished, and we were just chatting, chatting, chatting. He’s telling me loads of gossip. More wine, more wine, more wine,” remembers Cooke.

“I don’t remember getting home,” she continues. “I remember I tipped my head down to put my hair in a pony, fell over. And then I woke up the next day, and I had a chip in my tooth. Very slight chip but enough that the tongue magnifies it. And you’re like, ‘What have I done?’ No one knew on set until now.”

While the first day of filming was daunting, Olivia Cooke also has quite the task ahead of her as she prepares to step into the shoes of Emily Carey, who started the Alicent role. House of Dragon will see a time jump in the sixth episode, and a few of the characters aged up with different actors. As hectic as that may feel, it can’t be as bad as a chipped tooth during your first day of filming a Game of Thrones prequel.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, which is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen.

House of the Dragon features a cast that includes Paddy Considine (The Outsider), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Milly Alcock (Upright), Emily Carey (Casualty), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man), Steve Toussaint (Small Axe), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Fabien Frankel (The Serpent), Sonoya Minuzo (Crazy Rich Asians),  and Graham McTavish (Outlander).

House of the Dragon airs on on Sundays on HBO in the US and on Mondays on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
