Paul Greengrass to direct Jimi Hendrix biopic

May 10, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Legendary Pictures and director Paul Greengrass have had ambitions of bringing the life of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix to the big screen for several years, and now Deadline is reporting that they’ve secured the approval of Hendrix’s estate and are set to move forward with the project.

Four years ago, Experience Hendrix turned down the opportunity to cooperate with the film, fearing that it could harm sales of Hendrix’ back catalogue. However, since then John Ridley has released the unauthorised Jimi: All Is By My Side, which disappeared without a trace at the box office. Unlike that film, Greengrass’ biopic has secured the rights to some of Hendrix’s most famous tunes, including the likes of Foxy Lady and Purple Haze.

Legendary’s biopic has been written by Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter), and is expected to go into production after Greengrass reunites with Matt Damon on the latest Bourne movie, which is set to arrive next July.
