Peaky Blinders film officially greenlit by Netflix with Cillian Murphy and creator Steven Knight returning

June 5, 2024 by Ricky Church

After years of teases, the Peaky Blinders film has officially been greenlit for Netflix. Deadline reports Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby with series creator Steven Knight producing and season one director Tom Harper helming the film.

Peaky Blinders is based on the real Peaky Blinders gang run by the Shelby crime family in Birmingham. The series follows Murphy’s Thomas Shelby, the leader of the Shelby clan, in the aftermath of World War I and his rise through both the criminal and political ranks. The series premiered in 2013 and ran for six seasons, ending in 2022.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy said of his return to Peaky Blinders. “It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

“I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war,” said Knight.

“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

Starring alongside Murphy in the series was the late Helen McCrory, who passed away just as filming on the final season began, Paul Anderson, Annabelle Wallis, Sophie Rundle, Sam Neill, Joe Cole, Tom Hardy, Ned Dennehy, Benjamin Zephaniah, Finn Cole, Natasha O’Keeffe and Anya Taylor Joy.

Peaky Blinders will be written by Knight and produced by Netflix and BBC Film. Knight will produce with Murphy, Caryn Mandabach and Guy Heeley while Harper will executive produce alongside David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren and David Mason.

Production on the Peaky Blinders film will begin later this year.
