While Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is in post-production on the feature film The Immortal Man, a sequel series set in post-WWII Britain has been ordered for two seasons by BBC and Netflix which will follow the next generation of the Shelby clan.
Peaky Blinders starred Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the leader of the Shelby crime family in Birmingham as he tries extending their influence throughout England. The series ran for six seasons which concluded in 2022, but will see Murphy reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in The Immortal Man set during the second World War.
The sequel, which is unknown if it will be called Peaky Blinders or have a different title for the new series, will take place in a post-war Birmingham as the Blinders and other organizations vie to reconstruct the city in their own image. The official synopsis reads:
Britain, 1953. After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel. In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.
“I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story,” Knight said. “Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”
It is not known at this time if Murphy will star in the sequel series so as not to spoil Tommy’s possible fate in The Immortal Man, but he will serve as an executive producer alongside Knight. It will be produced by Peaky Blinders studio Garrison Drama and Kudos.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be embarking on a new chapter of Peaky Blinders with our wonderful partners at Kudos, Garrison Drama and the BBC,” said Netflix’s Mona Qureshi. “There are few modern storytellers to match Steven Knight and we will be on the edge of our seats as he returns to the streets of Birmingham and to the next generation of the Shelby family. Along with our global audience, we are ready to be captivated anew!”
“This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBC’s most-loved dramas,” said Lindsay Salt, BBC’s Director of Drama. “Steven has worked his magic once again and I can’t wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham. We are delighted to be working with Kudos, Garrison Drama and Netflix on this epic show. There’s plenty of drama for Peaky fans to look forward to!”
“Peaky Blinders is one of the most iconic, era-defining dramas of our time and Banijay UK is delighted to be helping to bring Steven Knight’s vision for the epic next chapters to life. Made by a brilliant new production partnership, led by Karen Wilson at Kudos, with Jamie Glazebrook from Garrison Drama, the story of the next generation of Shelbys will grip Peaky fans old and new,” Banijay UK CEO Patrick Holland stated.
Along with being in post-production for The Immortal Man, Knight will write the next James Bond 007 film for director Denis Villeneuve. The Immortal Man will be released in 2026.
