Phil Lord and Chris Miller say Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse delay is to make “the most satisfying conclusion”

August 16, 2023 by Ricky Church

Undoubtedly one of the biggest movies of the summer if not the year has been Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, the animated sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. With the film ending on a massive cliffhanger that will lead directly into the third film Beyond The Spider-Verse, originally envisioned as Across The Spider-Verse Part Two, fans will have to wait a little longer for the anticipated sequel due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes as writers and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller promise to develop “the most satisfying conclusion” to the Spider-Verse trilogy.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse was originally set for a March 29, 2024 release date, but due to the WGA and SAG -AFTRA strike Sony has delayed much of its remaining 2023 film slate back into next year. However, Beyond The Spider-Verse was taken off the calendar completely as the film “requires a number of voiceovers and won’t be ready in time”, not to mention the final touches on the extensive animation involved. In an interview with Digital Spy, Lord and Miller addressed the delay and only said it will be released “when it is ready.”

“Those conversations are thankfully above our paygrade, but I can tell you we’re already hard at work on it, and we’ll take the time it takes to make it great,” Lord said.

As to what fans can expect from the anticipated sequel, Miller said they are continuing to be ambitious with the scope of their characters, alternate dimensions and action. “What we’re trying to accomplish with the film is have it be the most satisfying conclusion to the story than it can be, and take it to places that you haven’t been before. And make you laugh and cry, and cheer and think.”

Hopefully we can get a better idea of its release soon as the animators continue working hard on the film and the strikes can come to a speedy and positive conclusion for all involved.

“Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga (2018, Best Animated Feature Film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders, and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hails from directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers, and features a voice cast that includes Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Jake Johnson as Peter. B Parker, Oscar Issac as Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Karan Soni as Spider-Man India and Jason Schwartzman as The Spot.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is available on digital August 8 and on 4K UHD & Blu-ray on September 5. It has over 90 minutes of extra content, including a deleted scene and filmmaker commentary.
