Rumour: Mortal Kombat animated movie in development at Warner Bros.

January 12, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With Warner Bros.’ plans for a live-action Mortal Kombat adaptation seemingly no closer to becoming a reality, Revenge of the Fans is now reporting that the studio is working on an animated movie (a possible two-parter) based upon the iconic video game fighting series.

According to the report, Warner Bros. Animation has already assembled a voice cast for the movie which includes Joel McHale (Community), Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter), Fred Tatasciore (Avengers Assemble), Grey Griffin (Young Justice), Darin DePaul (Justice League Action) and Ike Amadi (Trollhunters), along with video game voice actors Patrick Seitz (Scorpion) and Steve Blum (Sub-Zero) and Kevin Michael Richardson, who lent his voice to Goro in the live-action Mortal Kombat movie from 1995.

The site has been dropping a number of as-yet-unconfirmed reports about Warner Animation projects over the past week or so, including Superman: Red Son and Batman: The Long Halloween adaptations, which it claims is an effort by Warner Bros. to bulk out its exclusive content for the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service.

Warner Bros. acquired the Mortal Kombat franchise back in 2009 with its purchase of Midway (which was subsequently renamed NetherRealm) and relaunched the video game series in 2011. A movie reboot has been in the works since that time, with Aquaman director James Wan on board to produce and commercials director Simon McQuoid signing on to helm the film back in 2016.
