Rumour: Next X-Men film could revisit the Dark Phoenix Saga

April 17, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Get your pinch of salt at the ready, as Heroic Hollywood claims to have the inside scoop on the storyline being considered for the next X-Men film after X-Men: Apocalypse. According to the site, “studio sources” have revealed that Fox is mulling over the possibility of revisiting the seminal Dark Phoenix Saga for the as-yet-unannounced seventh instalment in the main franchise.

Fox did of course incorporate elements of the story arc into X-Men: The Last Stand (although that has now been wiped from continuity given the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past), but Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg revealed back in January that they are open to revisiting the saga, while X-Men: Apocalypse is reintroducing the character of Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones).

So, is there any truth to this rumour, or is it more Heroic Guesswork? Given that the Dark Phoenix Saga is one of the best-loved X-Men arcs, one would assume it is highly likely that it has been mentioned at some point. But let’s face it – you could pick twenty X-Men storylines out of a hat, and at least half of them will have been brought up in discussions inside the studio. And there’s a world of difference between being mentioned in passing and actually becoming a reality.

Personally, if Fox is going to go down the Dark Phoenix route, the next instalment seems a little too early, unless they have Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey making contact with the Phoenix in X-Men: Apocalypse. One film surely isn’t enough to set up the story and do it justice.

Would you like to see the Dark Phoenix Saga adapted for the next X-Men movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
