Rumour: Spider-Man: Homecoming’s The Tinkerer has connections to an Avenger and another classic Spidey villain

August 12, 2016 by Luke Owen

Originally published August 12, 2016. Updated June 30, 2023.

It was announced just a few days ago that Orange is the New Black‘s Michael Chernus had been added to the rather large cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming as Phineas Mason aka The Tinkerer. Well Heroic Hollywood claim to have the scoop on the character, and his role in the movie.

Warning – potential spoilers below.

According to the site, Mason is a former employee of Tony Stark and was personally fired by the man himself a few years ago, making it a post-Avengers event. As he is in the comics, Mason will provide technology for The Vulture and classic Spider-Man villain The Shocker, who will be played by Bokeem Woodbine. Not only that, but all of Tinkerer’s tech comes from Chitari technology.

With Robert Downey Jr. set to reprise his role of Tony Stark/Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it seems likely that The Tinkerer will have some sort of connection to him. However, none of this is confirmed so take it all with a pinch of salt.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Marvel Studios’ “Captain: Civil War,” begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging superhero in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veteran Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton (Birdman), Michael Barbieri (Little Men), Zendaya (K.C. Undercover), Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), Martin Starr (Silicon Valley), Donald Glover (Community), Laura Harrier (One Life to Live), Kenneth Choi (Captain America: The First Avenger), Hannibal Buress (Broad City), Isabella Amara (The Boss), Jorge Lendeborg, Jr. (Graceland), JJ Totah (Glee), Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black), Bokeem Woodbine (Riddick), Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey), Garcelle Beauvais (Hollywood Today Live), Tiffany Espensen (Kirby Buckets), Tyron Woodley (Kickboxer: Vengeance), Michael Chernus  (Orange is the New Black) and Martha Kelly (Baskets). The film is set for release on July 7th, 2017.
