Russell T. Davies slams Disney for “pathetic” and “craven” bisexuality reveal in Marvel’s Loki

August 12, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Russell T. Davies, the former Doctor Who showrunner and creator of It’s a Sin and Queer as Folk, has slammed Marvel’s Loki series for its portrayal of bisexuality.

“I think huge, clanging warning bells are ringing as the giants rise up with Netflix and Disney Plus especially,” Davies said during a recent panel on the state of queer representation in television (via Uproxx). “I think that’s a very great worry. ‘Loki’ makes one reference to being bisexual once, and everyone’s like, ‘Oh my god, it’s like a pansexual show.’ It’s like one word. He said the word ‘prince,’ and we’re meant to go, ‘Thank you, Disney! Aren’t you marvelous?’ It’s pathetic. It’s a ridiculous, craven, feeble gesture towards the vital politics and the stories that should be told.”

Davies is specifically referring to a scene in episode three, titled Lamentis, in which Tom Hiddleston’s Loki reveals that he has had both male and female lovers during his lifetime when having a heart-to-heart conversation with Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie. However, it seems like the buzz around the series being so inclusive has gotten on the wrong side of the filmmaker.
