The Russos wanted Thanos to behead Captain America in Avengers: Endgame

July 20, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

While many fans assumed that we’d get to see The Death of Captain America playing out on the big screen once Chris Evans decided to hand up his shield, the Russo brothers opted instead to go in another direction in Avengers: Endgame by having Steve Rogers travelling back to the past and live out his life with Peggy Carter.

However, as revealed to Entertainment Weekly at the San Diego Comic-Con, the Russos originally considered a much darker fate for Cap:

“We clung to that story line for so long just for that moment of Thanos walking through a portal and dropping Captain America’s severed head,” said Anthony, with Joe adding: “We had most of the script working except for the third act, because Anthony and I were clinging to this concept that we wanted Thanos to walk up to the Avengers and throw Captain America’s head on the ground. We couldn’t give up on it, and finally we said, ‘All right, what if we don’t do that, can we find another way into the third act?’ And that’s when it turned into what it is now.”

Having Thanos decapitate Cap would certainly have been a shocking moment, and no doubt one that would have devastated his legion of fans, but probably a little too dark for the Marvel Cinematic Universe..? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
