Ryan Coogler comments on the pressure of making Black Panther 2

November 7, 2018 by Samuel Brace

There naturally comes a lot of pressure with making a sequel to one of the highest grossing films in history but Ryan Coogler seems to be handling it just fine.

Black Panther was a massive success, especially in the US, where the film actually earned more money than Avengers: Infinity War. Black Panther 2 is now, of course, on the way, with Ryan Coogler returning to the director’s chair.

Making the sequel comes with plenty of pressure but Coogler has commented on how well he and his team are handling the occasion while speaking to IndieWire: “When it comes to making a sequel, I’ve never done it before, a sequel to something that I’ve directed myself. So I think there’s gonna be a lot of pressure there, but what we’re going to try to do is just focus on the work, like we always do. Really try to go step by step and try to quiet everything else around us, really focus on trying to make something that has some type of meaning.”

So a quiet confidence from Coogler and his team. What about you? Do you think Black Panther 2 can match the quality and success of the first film?

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, John Kani as King T’Chaka and Nabiyah Be as Linda.
