Sam Worthington says Avatar 2 is a movie about family

February 15, 2017 by Gary Collinson

James Cameron has spent almost as long developing his Avatar sequels as he did the first movie, but after confirming that the scripts are now finished, it looks like he’s about ready to pull the trigger on his hugely ambitious plans to shoot FOUR movies back to back.

The sequels will see Sam Worthington reprising his role as Jake Sully, and speaking to We Got This Covered to promote his new film The Shack, the actor has spoken about his preparation, as well as revealing that family will be a big theme of Avatar 2.

“They’re going to be shooting concurrently,” said Worthington. “The plan is to have some time in between, I think, but these things are always ambiguous until they start. We’re still set to start in the summer, though. James needed time to perfect the scripts. Whenever he says jump I go because he’s the man. I’ve read all the scripts, they’re great. This is going to be Jake eight years later, and he’s got a family now.”

“This film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen, he continued. “The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he’s been living in the world for a while now, so what’s this world he’s seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic.”

Avatar 2 is currently slated to arrive in cinemas in December 2018, followed by Avatar 3 in 2020, Avatar 4 in 2022 and Avatar 5 in 2023. Worthington will be joined in the cast by the returning Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang.
