Saoirse Ronan to star in Steve McQueen’s World War II film Blitz

September 23, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Currently to be found running around the West End solving crimes in comedy caper See How They Run, Saoirse Ronan is set to stay in London, albeit for a completely different reason in Steve McQueen’s World War II drama Blitz.

Variety reports that the four-time Academy Award nominee will lead the epic film for Apple TV+, and that Ronan (Ammonite, Little Women) will star alongside an as yet unnamed newcomer.

Blitz will be McQueen’s first feature film since 2018’s Widows, and will tell the stories of a group of Londoners during the aerial bombing of the British capital during the war. The Small Axe creator is writing, directing and producing the film, which is set to go before cameras later on this year.

Blitz joins the slate of high-profile films currently queued up at Apple, with awards contenders such as Jennifer Lawrence vehicle Causeway, Peter Farrelly’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, hoping to succeed in the wake of CODA‘s historic streaming-service Best Picture win.
