Scarlett Johansson confirms we will finally learn what happened to Black Widow in Budapest

November 9, 2020 by Liam Waddington

One of the most asked questions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is what exactly happened to Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and Clint Barton/Hawkeye in Budapest – the mission which was briefly mentioned in Marvel’s The Avengers. Now, it seems like we will finally learn about what happened in the upcoming Black Widow movie.

Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson confirmed in Marvel’s Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book (via Screen Rant) that the film will finally reveal exactly what happened on the aforementioned mission, ultimately resolving that “throwaway” line in the first Avengers film.

“We all agreed that we had to find out what happened in Budapest. That started out as this throwaway line which Joss Whedon threw into Marvel’s The Avengers as a funny moment between Hawkeye and Black Widow. That’s Clint and Natasha talking about their history, and you get a fun little Easter egg for fans to theorize about. We thought that if we don’t go back to Budapest and find out what really happened there, people will feel unsatisfied. I wondered what did happen there?” Johansson said.

She continued, “We often talked about what is going on in Natasha’s head. I really think that Natasha is haunted by the fact that she has this past that she feels so guilty about. Unfinished business is that sense of guilt that follows her around, which all stems from what happened in Budapest. Black Widow is not about what happened in Budapest, but it’s a huge jumping-off point for us to understand the heaviness of Natasha’s burden.”

As for the film’s other plot points, Black Widow director Cate Shortland confirmed earlier this year that the prequel will also serve as a passing of the baton to Johansson’s co-star Florence Pugh – who is set to play Yelena Belova.

“[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Shortland said. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
