Scream VI looks to up the ante by being “100 times gorier”, says Melissa Barrera

December 12, 2022 by EJ Moreno

If you saw 2022’s Scream, the fifth film in the long-running slasher franchise, you know actress Melissa Barrera took part in one of the film’s goriest moments. But things are getting bloodier as we move to the next movie, says the new Scream leading lady.

During an interview with Collider, Barrera hyped up the upcoming sixth installment and said things will get a lot nastier in the next outing.

“There was a saying on set because directors Matt [Bettinelli-Olpin] and Tyler [Gillett] were always asking for more blood and more sweat. They always just wanted more. ‘More blood spritz’ was the saying because they would just always want more. With the last Scream, they were tip-toeing and trying to be very respectful of what the franchise had been, up until that point, and keeping their inner gory dreams at bay. But with this one, they were like, ‘We’re going all out.’ It’s potentially a hundred times gorier.”

Wes Craven’s original four Scream films weren’t scared to get a bit bloody, but it seems the Radio Silence-era of Scream is upping the violence like never before. While some fans won’t love it, the perfect way to up the ante in a sixth installment is to make the violence feel lasting and impactful. Scream VI will need all the help it can get with the news that Neve Campbell will likely not show up in the film, so a bit of a gorier entry could balance out some things.

Scream VI is certainly a hotly-anticipated project, and there’s been online chatter about a potential trailer for weeks after some alleged photos from the film leaked online. You can find those here.

Scream VI is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett, who reunite with Scream 2022 cast members Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. Franchise mainstay Courteney Cox and Scream 4’s Hayden Panettiere also return, alongside new additions including Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Dermot Mulroney (Hanna), Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water), Liana Liberato (The Beach House), Devyn Nekoda (Ghostwriter), Josh Segarra (Arrow), Henry Czerny (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1) and Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home).

Scream VI will release on March 31st, 2023.
