SEGA’s Eternal Champions movie in development at Skydance

SEGA’s 1993 title Eternal Champions looks set to follow the likes of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Tekken, with THR reporting that a feature film adaptation of the fighting game is in development from Skydance.

As per the trade, Skydance has set screenwriter Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) to pen the script for the project, adding another video game adaptation to his resume after 2019’s Pokemon: Detective Pickachu and the upcoming The Legend of Zelda from director Wes Ball. He also recently signed on to write the screenplay for Paramount and Hasbro’s Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie.

Developed and released on on the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis, Eternal Champions follows a group of people from throughout history destined for greatness who are plucked from their time moments before their untimely deaths by an omniscient being called the Eternal Champion to participate in a tournament where the winner change their fate will bring balance to the universe.

Eternal Champions is being produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger of Skydance alongside SEGA’s Toru Nakahara, who has produced the successful Sonic the Hedgehog feature film series.
