Shin Godzilla earns just over $1 million from its United States screenings

October 17, 2016 by Luke Owen

American fans were delighted to hear that the latest Japanese-produced Godzilla movie, Shin Godzilla, would be getting a short theatrical run in the States. Released last Monday [read our review here], the film brought home just over $1 million.

Screening in 488 theatres across the U.S., Shin Godzilla averaged 2.2k per screen to earn $1.09 million from four days. To put it against previous Godzilla releases (not counting the 1998 and 2014 remakes), Shin Godzilla opened to more than Godzilla 1985 ($2k opening weekend from 235 screens), but not as strong as Godzilla 2000, though that movie opened opened on significantly more screens ($4 million from 2,111 screens). When you break that down, Shin Godzilla earned more per screen than Godzilla 2000.

“An unknown accident occurs in Tokyo Bay’s Aqua Line, which causes an emergency cabinet to assemble. All of the sudden, a giant creature immediately appears, destroying town after town with its landing reaching the capital. This mysterious giant monster is named “Godzilla”.”

Shin Godzilla is on U.S. screens until October 18th. As yet, there’s still no word on a UK release.
