Sicario screenwriter has already mapped out a third movie

June 19, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Next week sees the release of Sicario: Day of the Soldado, director Stefan Sollima’s (Gomorrah) follow up to Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed 2015 crime thriller Sicario, and – as producer Trent Luckinbill has revealed to Screen Rant – screenwriter Taylor Sheridan has already mapped out his plan for a third movie.

“We were so thrilled that people responded to the first one and we felt justified in making a second because we loved it,” said Luckinbill. “We probably are the biggest fans of the movie. And we feel that way again. Obviously, even more than the first one, we kind of leave off a little teaser at the end. Yeah. And we would love to kind of see, you know, this was always in the back of Taylor’s mind, and we loved it, and we thought, God, it would be great if we could get there. I think we’d like to do that now. I certainly feel like the second one lived up to the expectations.”

Previous rumours have suggested that Denis Villeneuve could return to the director’s chair for a third Sicario, although the filmmaker is currently tied up with his ambitious plans for a two-film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece Dune, which may well rule him out of contention.

In SICARIO, Day of the Soldado, the series begins a new chapter. In the drug war, there are no rules – and as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) calls on the mysterious Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), whose family was murdered by a cartel kingpin, to escalate the war in nefarious ways. Alejandro kidnaps the kingpin’s daughter to inflame the conflict – but when the girl is seen as collateral damage, her fate will come between the two men as they question everything they are fighting for.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado is set for release on June 29th and sees Stefano Sollima directing a cast that sees Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro reprising their Sicario roles alongside Isabela Moner (Transformers: The Last Knight), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Catherine Keener (The 40 Year Old Virgin), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Magnificent Seven and Jeffrey Donovan (Fargo).
