Solo: A Star Wars story pulls inspiration from The Big Lebowski, according to writers

February 13, 2018 by Jordan Jones

We have finally got our first look at Solo: A Star Wars story this month, and it has a very unique feel to it. The cast, and crew have promised a heist film since production began, and it looks like the film will be exactly that.

So where did the writers get the idea to make a seedy, criminal underground style of film? In an interview with EE, Lawrence and Jon Kasdan talk about the look and feel of Solo: a Star Wars Story, and revealed a film that has served as inspiration for the writers:

“[Solo] has that flavor of a crime world that has weirdness and surprise and people stumbling into things — and other people very intentionally getting into [trouble]. The Big Lebowski is a great example because Solo has a more off-kilter tone than you’ve ever seen in [Star Wars].”

That’s quite an unexpected source of inspiration for a Star Wars film, but The Big Lebowski is certainly a worthy muse. What do you make of it? Was this the kind of humor that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were trying to inject into the film? Let us know your thoughts below…

A new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’Ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Tien Hoang (Now You See Me 2) as Moloch’s henchman and Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on May 25th 2018.
