According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has not yet given up hope of a sequel to David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and is considering rounding out the trilogy by combining Stieg Larsson’s remaining two Millennium books, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, into a single sequel, which would then be followed by an adaptation of the upcoming fourth book, The Girl In The Spider’s Web, penned by David Lagercrantz.
The U.S. version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo starred Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, and was eyed as the first of a trilogy of film’s based on Larsson’s books, with Fincher aiming to shoot the two sequels back to back. However, progress seemed to stall, with Rooney Mara stating on several occasions that it looked unlikely they would ever become a reality.
THR reports that former Sony chief Amy Pascal, who is attached as a producer, is not keen on the idea of combing two books, as this would mean shelving Steve Zaillian’s script for The Girl Who Played With Fire, which cost the studio a mid-seven figure sum. However, it appears that Sony is also keen on capitalising on renewed interest in the series given the fourth book’s September release date.
