Sony picks up Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett’s Truth at Cannes

May 19, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

We have reached the halfway point in this year’s prestigious Cannes Film Festival over in France, and a big portion of talk across the Channel is focused on Cate Blanchett and her performance alongside Rooney Mara in Todd Hayne’s critically-acclaimed Carol. And her good form continues today with Deadline reporting that her next project, Truth, has been sold to Sony Pictures Classics for $6 million.

The film, directed by screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) co-stars Robert Redford (All Is Lost), Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow), Topher Grace (Interstellar) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and tells the story of “Rathergate”, a famous scandal from the 1960’s which involved CBS news anchor Dan Rather and 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes. Redford plays Rather whilst Blanchett stars as Mapes.

Truth is based on a 2005 memoir by Mary Mapes entitled Truth And Duty: The Press, The President And The Privilege Of Power. Early indications are that the film could be released in time for Awards season this year, but an official announcement has yet been made.
