Sony to develop One Punch Man movie with Venom writers

April 22, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Sony is looking to expand its catalog with a new film based on a popular anime and manga series. Variety reports that the studio is moving forward with an adaptation of One Punch Man, a manga that dates back to 2009.

Attached to the project is Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, writers for Sony’s 2018 film Venom. Avi Arad and Ari Arad of Arad Productions will serve as producers of the film. At the time of reporting, there is no director or lead actor attached to the project.

Massively popular in its home of Japan and a growing love around the world, One Punch Man follows the story of Saitama, a superhero who can defeat any opponent with a single punch. He begins to seek an opponent worthy enough after growing bored in his fight against evil.

The series saw its worldwide sales hit over 30 million copies. When VIZ Media published the English edition for the U.S. in 2015, the first and second volumes made the New York Times manga bestsellers list and saw nominations for an Eisner and a Harvey Award.

Variety is reporting that Sony is very high on the property for its popularity and the possibility of becoming another franchise for the studio.
