Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming finally made its way to the Middle Kingdom this weekend, with the Sony and Marvel produced reboot enjoying a solid $22.2 million opening day, with a further $1.5 million in Friday previews. The wall-crawler’s solo MCU debut has now amassed a worldwide haul of $770 million, making it the highest-grossing reboot of all time – a record previously held by 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man on $757 million.
According to projections from Forbes, Homecoming will likely pass $800 million globally this weekend thanks to its debut in China, and could potentially reach as high as $880 million – which would put it ahead of Wonder Woman ($814 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863 million) to make it the biggest superhero movie of the year so far. However, to become the highest-grossing entry in the Spider-Man franchise it would need to shift a few more tickets however, with 2007’s Spider-Man 3 sitting on $891 million.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan.
