Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soars with record-breaking December opening

December 17, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swung into cinemas this past weekend off the back of absolutely stellar reviews [read ours here, here and here], with the animated superhero adventure topping the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

The Sony Animation movie grossed $35.4 million in North America, surpassing the $35.2 million record set by Universal and Illumination’s Sing for the largest December opening for an animated movie. The film also went on to add a further $21 million from 44 international markets, including the UK ($2.9 million), Russia ($2.3 million) and Australia ($2.3 million), and expands into a further 11 territories this week including China.

With a reported $90 million production budget, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse still has a way to go until it is in the black, but the film is expected to perform very well across the holiday season and Sony is already confident enough of having a hit on its hands that it has announced a sequel and a female-led spinoff entitled Spider-Women.

Into the Spider-Verse caps a solid year for Sony with regards to its Marvel properties, the Tom Hardy-headlined Venom having already proven to be a major hit with $852.7 million worldwide.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, the screenplay is by Phil Lord. The film is produced, in association with Marvel, by Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg.
