Star Trek 3 filming underway in Vancouver

June 26, 2015 by Gavin Logan

The third instalment in the rebooted Star Trek franchise – reportedly titled Star Trek Beyond – hasn’t all been smooth sailing since it was first announced. Director and writer changes put the whole project in jeopardy. But now we’re happy to see that filming has officially got underway just outside of Vancouver, Canada.

The cast have been arriving on set over the past few days and actors Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto – who will return as Uhura and Spock – posted a couple of pictures on their Instagram accounts confirming the news.

Zachary Quinto dedicated his reprisal as Spock to legendary actor Leonard Nimoy – who sadly passed away at the start of the year – and urged fans to help support the proposed Spock documentary being developed by Leonard’s son Adam:

“In honour of my first day back and the memory of my dear friend Leonard go to http://bit.ly/LoveOfSpock and support his son Adam’s documentary FOR THE LOVE OF SPOCK!”

Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) will take over from J.J. Abrams on directing duties. The original script written by Roberto Orci has been revamped by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung (Banshee, Big Love) at the request of Paramount and was reportedly only finished last month.

Star Trek 3 is due for release on 8th July 2016
