Steve Carell’s Rooster renewed for season 2

April 9, 2026 by Ricky Church

HBO has renewed its hit comedy Rooster for a second season.

The comedy is led by Steve Carell, who stars as an author-turned-professor at college who tries to connect with his daughter amid her divorce from her husband, both of whom also work at the college which causes more strife and scandal among the faculty and students.

The series also features Charly Clive, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, Danielle Deadwyler, Lauren Tsai, Connie Britton, Robby Hoffman, Annie Mumolo, Alan Ruck and Rory Scovel. It was created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses.

Rooster premiered in early March and quickly became a hug hit for HBO as the network’s most-watched comedy for an inaugural season in over a decade.

“We are so grateful to Warner Bros. Television and HBO for being such great partners and to Casey, Amy and Channing for giving us the opportunity to keep making this show with Steve and our amazing cast. It’s been a career highlight for both of us, but more for Matt than me,” Lawrence said.

Rooster follows Carell’s character Greg Russo, an author of pulpy, popular novels whose lead character is named Rooster. He comes to the college where his daughter, Katie (Clive), teaches and is in the midst of a personal crisis and agrees to stay on as a guest lecturer in exchange for Katie being able to remain in her job after she accidentally burns down her cheating husband’s (Phil Dunster) house.
