Steven Soderbergh has written a Sex, Lies, and Videotape sequel

May 23, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Productions may have halted because of the global health crisis, but Hollywood should certainly have plenty of scripts to pick from once the shutdown begins to lift – and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has written three of them, including a sequel to his 1989 feature debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape.

“When the lockdown happened here in New York, in order to stay organized and sane, I decided I’m going to write,” Soderbergh told Flaviar’s NightCap Live. “So within the first 6 or 7 weeks of the lockdown, I finished three screenplays. One of them was a rewrite, one of them was an original, and one was an adaptation of a novel that I’ve been wanting to do. The original was a sequel to Sex, Lies, and Videotape. It was an idea that had been circling for a while, and I felt like I came up with the way to get back in, and so I wrote it, and I want to make it.”

Sex, Lies, and Videotape was written and directed by Soderbergh, and starred James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher and Laura San Giacomo. The indie drama won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and Audience Award at Sundance, while Soderbergh also received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
