Steven Spielberg insists Peter Jackson’s Tintin sequel “is not dead”

March 24, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

At the moment we’re getting a lot of exposure to one of the greatest directors of all time, as Steven Spielberg continues to do the rounds on the Ready Player One (read our review here) press circuit. Now, in-between discussing whether Netflix movies deserve awards recognition, or the importance of the MeToo movement, Spielberg has squeezed in an update on the sequel to 2011’s The Adventures of Tintin. He had the following to say to Premiere:

“Peter Jackson has to do the second part. Normally, if all goes well, he will soon start working on the script. As it takes two years of animation work on the film, for you, I would not expect to see it for about three years. But Peter will stick to it. Tintin is not dead!”

Known as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn outside of North America, the film grossed $373 million worldwide, but only $77 million of that was from the all-important (at the time) US box office. This might have been the reason behind the delay, with Jackson’s sequel, which will be reportedly be based on Herge’s ‘The Seven Crystal Balls’ and ‘Prisoners of the Sun’, announced at the same time the first film went into production. The growing importance of the global box-office might have convinced Paramount to push forward.

Is a Tintin sequel something you want to see, or would you rather Peter Jackson made his first post Hobbit trilogy movie something original? Let us know what you think about the potential return of Jamie Bell’s mocap detective in the comments section below…
