Steven Spielberg-produced Goonies sequel moving forward at Warner Bros.

February 15, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Hey You Guys! It felt like there was more chance of finding One-Eyed Willy’s treasure than the world getting a sequel to Richard Donner’s 1985 classic The Goonies, but you can fire up some Cyndi Lauper and start getting excited because a Steven Spielberg produced follow-up is moving forward at Warner Bros.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the studio has tapped Potsy Ponciroli (Greedy People) to write the screenplay, while the original’s creative trio of Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus, and Lauren Shuler Donner are set to return to the Goon Docks as producers. No director is attached to the film, but they would be stepping into the shoes of the legendary Richard Donner, who sadly passed away in 2021.

Based on a story by Spielberg, which was turned into a screenplay by Columbus, The Goonies was released in the summer of ’85, and went on to gross $125 million worldwide, off a budget of just $19 million. However, its most impressive feat is in how it has left an indelible legacy that has seen multiple generations cherish going on adventures with The Goonies over the following 40-year period.

Talk of a sequel has been around for years, with Steven Spielberg revealing that he would often discuss ideas for a follow-up with Chris Columbus and Richard Donner, but they were never “able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies we made in the ‘80s.”

Reports give no indications as to whether any of the original cast will return, or if this next-gen Goonies will feature a new group of kids, but let us know what your preference would be, or if you’d prefer that this idea was left in the past like One-Eyed Willy’s treasure, by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
