Steven Spielberg reveals why a Goonies sequel never happened

April 28, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Why has a sequel to The Goonies never happened? Well, Steven Spielberg has revealed the details.

For so many of us, The Goonies holds a dear place in our hearts as a classic kids adventure film from our childhoods. There has been a demand for a sequel ever since its 1985 release but what has stopped it from happening?

Well, during a recent Goonies virtual reunion on YouTube (featuring the cast and crew, including director Richard Donner and screenwriter Christopher Colombus), executive producer and story writer Steven Spielberg explained:

“Chris and Dick and I and Lauren [Shuler Donner] have had a lot of conversations about it, and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water. The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies we made in the ‘80s.

“So until we do, people are just gonna have to look at this a hundred times. How are you gonna find seven miserable kids like this again that are all new and fresh?”

So, there you have it. It’s not like they haven’t tried but there just hasn’t been a compelling way to bring it back. Some things are better left in the past, however, so perhaps we should be grateful The Goonies has remained untouched.
