The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that DreamWorks’s distribution deal with The Walt Disney Company is set to expire after the release of Steven Spielberg’s The BFG in July 2016, with Disney opting against a renewal.
At this point, it’s unclear which studio DreamWorks will partner up with for future releases, although THR is reporting that the likely home will be Universal given its close ties with Spielberg, who most recently executive produced Universal’s monster hit Jurassic World.
DreamWorks – which was founded in 1994 by Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen – has struggled somewhat as of late to secure financing for its projects, while recent releases such as Need for Speed, The Fifth Estate and Delivery Man have failed to set the box office alight.
