Straight Outta Compton’s F. Gary Gray wants to direct Black Panther

August 3, 2015 by Luke Owen

There had been some rumours floating around that Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray could be next in line to helm Black Panther now that Ava DuVernary has stepped aside.

In an interview to promote the N.W.A biopic, Grey was asked about these rumours, which he dismissed, but noted that it would be something that he’s interested in.

“I would love to direct a superhero movie,” he told BlackTree TV. “We’ll see what happens. If [the rumours are] right, I’m there!”

Ironically enough, F. Gary Gray turned down the chance to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier so he could go off and make Straight Outta Compton, and its that movie that has now put him back on Marvel’s radar.

Would you like to see F. Gary Gray direct Black Panther?

Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job) with a cast that includes Corey Hawkins (Non-Stop) as Dr. Dre, O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Aldis Hodge (A Good Day to Die Hard) as MC Ren, Jason Mitchell (Dragon Eyes) as Easy E, Neil Brown Jr. (Bayou Tales) as DJ Yella, Keith Stanfield (The Purge: Anarchy) as Snoop Dogg, R. Marcus Taylor (The Gathering) as Suge Knight, Rogelio Douglas Jr. (Whiplash) as Chuck D and Paul Giamatti (San Andreas) as Jerry Heller. It is set to open on August 14th in the States and August 28th in the UK.
